Doing God Online - Open Lectures 2022

The Internet Gaze

Join us ONLINE for our second lecture in this series
14th November 2022
Dr Eric Stoddart - St Andrews University

Dr Eric Stoddart

Picture
For the first few years of its public release people gazed at the internet. It was not long before the internet gazed back. Eric Stoddart will explore our everyday practices of gazing into the internet and open up questions around the ways in which it keeps us under surveillance. He will suggest that ours is fundamentally an anxious gaze because we realise (perhaps not sufficiently) that our values and how we present ourselves are being shaped by the internet that watches - it being a digital system that neither slumbers nor sleeps. This gazing internet aims to make better consumers, so, Eric will argue, thoughtful people need a sharper take on what such 'desire for other things' means in terms of their religious values. He will offer some pointers on how Christians might learn to handle the internet's gaze and themselves gaze into the internet knowingly and grace-fully.
